WhatsApp for iOS has been updated to version 2.11.5, finally bringing a new iOS 7 design to the chat app, and a few new features.

One of the most popular third party chat apps, WhatsApp is one of the last big iOS apps to get an iOS 7 facelift. The new design brings it in line with the rest – the interface is clearer and flatter, and the WhatsApp icon is less shiny. The design doesn’t change how the app works, so you won’t feel lost using the new version.

One new feature is Broadcast Lists. This lets you message multiple people at once, but only if they have your phone number in their contact lists. Groups work as always, with any of your WhatsApp contacts. There are also new notification alerts and sounds, and WhatsApp now uses the text size you choose in general iOS settings.

You can still only turn the ‘last seen’ timestamp on or off once every 24 hours, which is one of WhatsApp’s stranger features, and nothing has been done to compete with the likes of LINE or Viber. While the new design is welcome, WhatsApp hasn’t tried to catch up or get ahead in terms of features. There are no stickers or other extras, which makes WhatsApp one of the more focused chat apps around.
