WhatsApp for Android has updated with the ability to gift your friends’ subscriptions. WhatsApp costs $0.99 per year but users have the option of paying for 3 and 5 years too. Payments can be made using Google Wallet or entering your credit card information on the web.

WhatsApp pay for a friend

To pay for a friend, go to their contact card view and tap on the menu button (three dots). You’ll see an option for Pay for (your friend’s name). Tapping on it will take you to a page where you can purchase 1, 3, or 5 years of WhatsApp service for your friend. This ability is only available to Android users at the moment.

The update also brings more control over who can see your last log in, profile picture, and status. Users have the choice of Everyone, No One, or My Contacts.

WhatsApp sharing options

Last but not least, two new widgets have been added. One displays your unread messages and the other is to quickly take and send a picture. This is great for people who want to preview their conversations without going into the app.
