We recently reported on a new Communities feature coming to WhatsApp. The feature enables the broader organization of groups and community-based interactions. Today we can report on more details, which have been leaked about the new feature as well as an interesting camera update that looks to be also coming to WhatsApp. Read on for more information:

The new WhatsApp Communities feature allows users to add up to 10 groups when they are creating a community, which can then be increased up to 50 groups later on. These community groups are called sub-groups and it will be possible for members of the community to choose which of the subgroups they would like to join.

The new feature allows organizations that currently only have the ability to create WhatsApp Groups to better segment their users by creating more thematically focused WhatsApp Groups within the broader community. For example, a sports league could have a community that then contains groups for each of the different teams.

Another feature that has been rolling out to beta users and which appears to be mixed up with the new communities feature is a new camera shortcut icon. The new icon has appeared for some beta users on the WhatsApp inbox page right next to the search icon. There still seem to be some bugs that need ironing out with this one though, as the new icon automatically disappears and is replaced by the new communities icon whenever the new feature is enabled. This means that both of these features are still likely weeks or months away from receiving a full rollout to all users.

In other recent WhatsApp News, a new feature is rolling that will enable users to set up chats with themselves that will be accessible across multiple devices.
